About Primary and Secondary Schools in The United States

The public education system in the United States caters to students ages 5-18, beginning with kindergarten for the nation’s youngest students.  Kindergarten in America serves as a gateway to primary school.  It is during this first year of formal education that students are officially introduced to books, reading and educationally-based activities that help develop motor skills.  More importantly, perhaps, kindergarten helps children learn to socialize with their peers in a large group setting, and to learn to work and play cooperatively within a more disciplined system than to what they are accustomed.

The school day in kindergarten is shorter than in other primary school grades, typically spanning 3 ½ to 4 hours, and although only one teacher is employed per classroom at this level, there are normally a number of parents who volunteer their time to assist with activities and supervision.

Primary Schools in the United States

Following kindergarten, U.S. children embark upon a primary school journey that will span 6 years, each of these constituting a new grade level.  From Grade-1 through Grade-6, the classes in primary school are taught by one teacher (and sometimes an assistant).  Each of these teachers is required to possess, at minimum, an undergraduate degree in liberal studies and a “multiple subjects” credential.  The latter of which is awarded after a one-year post graduate teacher preparation course that involves specific instruction in teaching methods and theory, classroom management and a mandatory period of student teaching under the direction of a certificated teacher in a real classroom.

Each grade in primary school has a set curriculum developed by the state, one that becomes increasingly more advanced with each grade level.  Students are instructed in a wide range of subject areas, including English and grammar, mathematics, science, history and social studies, as well as music, art, computers and physical education.

Secondary Schools in the United States

As it is in many countries, the secondary education in the United States is divided between two types of schools:  junior high school (also referred to as middle school) and high school.  When combined, students will receive six years of secondary education.

Junior High School

In the U.S. the number of years a student attends junior high school depends on the state.  In some states, this period will comprise three years—7th, 8th and 9th grade—while in others it will consist of only two years—7th and 8th grade.  Either way, the total time they will spend in secondary school (junior high school + high school) is 6 years.

Unlike primary school, and the one teacher model, in junior high school students will have several different teachers, each trained in a specific subject matter (mathematics, history, science, etc.).  These teachers also have to possess an undergraduate degree and a teaching certificate, only in this case that credential is for a single subject.

High School

In high school (9-12 or 10-12) students are required to take certain subjects according to their grade level.  As a graduation requirement, most schools will require 4 years of language arts, 2 years of foreign language, 3 years mathematics, 2 years history/government, biology, chemistry and physical education.  Subjects such as art, music and drama are offered as electives, as are courses in the classics, physics and computers.

To qualify for a high school diploma, students must receive passing grades in each of the required subjects mentioned above and pass a high school exit examination.

Most high schools throughout the country also offer a vocational track during the final two years of high school.  These programs, which are designed for students with no interest in attending university upon graduation, help give students a head start in life by offering training in a number of different career fields.

In addition to academics, most public U.S. high schools offer extra-curricular activities to the benefit of their students.  These include sports teams, cheerleading, newspaper and yearbook, drama and debate clubs, and cultural groups.
